Alternative Energy Sources

Alternative energy is often defined as energy derived from sources other than traditional fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal. Alternative energy is not widely used, yet it is usually environmentally friendly. It is also frequently renewable energy. Solar, wind, biomass, wave, and tidal energy are all examples of alternative energy sources.

The population problem is more than just a concern about the quantity of people. Every day, people consume food, fresh water, wood, minerals, and energy. Increased energy usage is depleting conventional energy sources while also creating pollution.

We now rely on fossil fuels and other nonrenewable energy sources. This is extremely harmful to the environment and will have a significant impact on future generations. The majority of today’s population is dependent on nonrenewable energy sources such as oil, natural gas, fossil fuel, and coal.

Because fossil fuels are a non-renewable source of energy, they may run out. Furthermore, when fossil fuels are used, they emit the gas carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide is referred to as a greenhouse gas because it retains heat from the sun and prevents it from escaping into space through the Earth’s atmosphere. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is rising. It causes global warming, which is the rise in Earth’s temperature.

Alternative and renewable energy sources are so required. Renewable energy is obtained from regenerative resources that renew after use. As a result, unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy emits fewer greenhouse gases.

Several countries are offering tax breaks and subsidies to encourage private sector or individual efforts to adopt renewable energy. Currently, renewable energy sources account for only 14 percent of global energy consumption. However, alternative energy has enormous promise. It could be huge enough to cover several times the amount of energy currently consumed.

Sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat are all examples of renewable or alternative energy. Wind energy is derived from wind power generated by wind turbines. Although the initial cost may be significant, wind energy is a non-polluting energy source with low maintenance costs.

Solar energy is derived from the sun’s beams that reach Earth. Solar energy can be used to generate both heat and power. Solar energy can be transformed to thermal energy or heat energy. It can be used to heat water as well as areas such as greenhouses, residences, and other structures.

Biomass energy is derived from plant and animal material that can be used to generate energy, such as wood from trees, waste from other plants, manure, or animal waste. There are various advantages of using biomass energy. It makes use of garbage that would otherwise be discarded and consumes methane gas (a greenhouse gas). Biomass can be used to produce fuels such as ethanol, which can be used as an alternative to gasoline.

Meanwhile, hydropower makes use of the energy gained by water as it descends in height. This is why hydropower plants are built near falls or dams. Hydropower has been employed since the beginning of the electric age, but its worth has yet to be developed and maximized.

Geothermal energy, or energy derived from the world’s underwater heat, is another potential energy source. Weather changes have no effect on geothermal power facilities. It is also cost effective, reducing people’s reliance on fossil fuels.

These simply demonstrate that we can use energy in many ways to reduce its negative influence on the environment. Alternative energy sources provide us the option of a bright and healthy future. It may be out of the norm, but it can also be beneficial.
